Ichiryu (一流) the best man

Life in Japan

Hello.

I wanna talk about some Japanese words today.

That’s “ichiryu” (一流). A handful of excellent people. No matter what field they work in, they shine brightly.

That reminds me of “Ichiro Suzuki” and “Shohei Ohtani” for now.Correctly, they are not ichiryu. They are both cho-ichiryu(超一流), because I think all major leaguers are top notch(一流) but the both of them stands out. Literally they are super stars.

I’ll never forget Ichiro hitting a walk-off home run against the Yankees. I’ll never forget Shohei Ohtani, who struck out his teammate Mike Trout at the end and led Japan to the championship. It was a dramatic victory. It’s like a truly comic-like development. I saw it live. They are the pride of Japan.

Let’s stop talking about baseball because you’ll soon find out I’m just a bandwagon fan (ニワカファン). It’s stuff like the legions of people wearing soccer uniforms that spring up all over the city only during the World Cup season. The economy is somewhat prosperous, but of course it is a target of scorn. What the hell are you saying! It’s good as long as it’s fun!

Everyone admires the best man. It’s 一流の男. Jordan for basketball, Tom Braidy for American football, Pele for soccer,Tom Cruise for movie, maybe.

Everyone wants to be a top-notch guy, but it’s hard to become. Very few people can be like them. That’s why we respect them.

(みんな一流の男になりたいけど滅多になれないからこそみんな憧れるんだよね。)

Plus, I think Japanese peole really like the idea of 一流 especially among men. Every time I go to a bookstore, I feel embarrassed ,seeing a pile of books like “the secret habits of top-class people” and then it goes like “you can do it!”. I always think to myself, smart people wouldn’t pay some money for stuff like that!

I don’t know if it’s unique to Japan, but I find it embarrassing because I’ve read books like that myself. I wanna be clever someday. Bye!
